The solidarity organization Africa Groups of Sweden (AGS) is a membership based organization working in Sweden and southern Africa. During the 70′s and 80′s, the main purpose was to support the liberation struggle in Angola, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau and Mozambique, and to fight the apartheid regime in South Africa and the continued colonization of Namibia and Zimbabwe. After the end of Portuguese colonialism and the fall of apartheid, AGS has participated in and supported the reconstruction and democratization processes in southern Africa.

Currently we work in partnership with organizations in Angola, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa and Zimbabwe contributing towards democracy and poverty eradication. AGS also has about 35 professionally trained and experienced development workers in southern Africa. Global Justice AGS funds and co-operates with organizations working for debt cancellation and financial and political self-determination. We also support work to increase public awareness about the unfair terms of trade. AGS operates four different programs:

Public Health
AGS contributes to the fight against HIV/AIDS mainly through preventive methods. We facilitate in-service training for staff in primary health care, giving special attention to maternity welfare. In Sweden we inform the public on the HIV/AIDS pandemic and its effects.

Local Economy

AGS supports small-scale production projects with both micro credits and training in organic farming methods. We also support organizations working with land reform and rural development.

Education for All

AGS works towards the Millennium Developing Goal “Education for all by the year 2015” through e.g. construction of schools and in-service training for teachers. We focus especially on improving girls’ access to education and literacy for women.

Global Justice

AGS funds and co-operates with organizations working for debt cancellation and financial and political self-determination. We also support work to increase public awareness about the unfair terms of trade.
