Erlassjahr is the German branch of the worldwide Jubilee movement for international debt cancellation. The network of currently more than 800 institutional members urges national and international creditors to write off Southern countries’ debts to truly sustainable levels and to reform international debt management towards an international insolvency framework.
erlassjahr.de was founded in 2001, when the Erlassjahr 2000 campaign came to an end. erlassjahr.de focuses on some specific country cases, based on members’ international, mostly ecumenical, relations. Some are HIPC countries, but tending more and more towards debtor countries that cannot access debt reduction under existing frameworks. The most prominent ones are Argentina, Ecuador, Brazil and Indonesia.
erlassjahr.de is also actively promoting international networking on the proposal for a fair and transparent arbitration framework in cooperation with campaigns and movements in the respective debtor countries.
